| So you want to make a guide or tutorial? Well, there are many steps to take in order to assure that, when you do post a guide or tutorial, it is neat, tidy, and ready to be used by forum users with a large range of intelligence. Step 1: Edit and revise your guide/tutorial (Check for correct spelling, grammar, and sentence structure).-Correct spelling and grammar are very, very important to maintain and fix when you are writing your guide/tutorial. A slight misspelling or miswording could transform a clear, concise sentence into a confusing jumble of words with a period at the end. The same goes with sentence structure. Don't make your sentences too long, or else your reader will become confused quickly and miss or incorrectly perform a step. If you don't see any motivation behind doing any of this, think of it this way: The more detailed and clear your guide/tutorial is, the less worthless questions you will have to answer that are caused by a single misspelling. Step 2: Limit the amount of pictures your guide/tutorial contains.-This step is especially important in guide or tutorials that explain how to correctly download and install software or check your system specifications. The bottom line with this step is this: Don't take and use a picture for EVERY SINGLE LITTLE step that you talk about in your guide/tutorial. Post a picture only in a situation when there could be confusion if you explained it with plain text (For example, post a picture if you say to right-click an icon, scroll down to a selection, and select something from the menu it gives you, but not when you say to click the green "Download Now" button) Step 3: Add some COLOR-This one is obvious, when you think about it. Would you rather stare at a 5-paragraph essay about a subject, or read a colorful brochure with pictures on the same subject? The choice is also obvious. The only limit I recommend putting on this is to use color ONLY when necessary. Highlighting an entire paragraph in a bright yellow is not necessary. However, highlighting words, headers, and your title is necessary, as it brings attention to the reader and notifies them of that sentence/word's importance. Step 4: ORGANIZE your guide-This one is rather important. Just look at my guide. It's neatly organized into three major components: an introduction, a main body (In this guide's case, "steps") and an ending. Organization and planning is important in a guide, as, as I've said time and time again, a jumble of words is hard to read and comprehend. Use PARAGRAPHS, HEADERS, and COLOR to organize your guide, and do not create the dreaded "Wall of Text". Use these 4 steps when you create your guide, and you will ensure yourself as an intellectual, worthy member of the community, whichever community that may be. | |
